Funk Plus One
You won't find another musician quite like Gaelynn Lea. Based in Duluth, Minnesota, she's a folk singer and violinist classically trained in Celtic and American fiddle traditions and has been honing her craft for the past 20 years. Born with brittle bone disease, she invented a new way to play her instrument, holding her violin upright as one would a cello.
EVERYONE NEEDS A LITTLE FUNK IN THEIR LIFE
For one of the last projects I oversaw for Great Big Story in NYC, we partnered with the Decemberists’ Chris Funk for a 6-episode exploration of the most curious and compelling untold stories of music across the USA. It was a heartwarming and eye-watering journey. The two lead producers, Jonathan O’Beirne and Andy Lampard told some beautiful stories. It was Chris’ first foray into video storytelling, so we wanted to explore how to use his voice and expertise without making him feel like an awkward dude on camera. I think we did an awesome job, but you can be the judge, by watching all the episodes here.
